Greek Salad (Authentic Horiatiki Recipe)

Greek Salad, also known as Horiatiki, is a classic Mediterranean dish made with fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, olives, green peppers, and creamy feta cheese. It’s light, refreshing, and packed with flavor — perfect as a side dish or a light main meal. This traditional recipe uses simple ingredients but delivers bold taste, making it a summer favorite all over the world.

Ingredients
  

  • 4 medium ripe tomatoes, cut into wedges
  • 1 cucumber, sliced into half-moons
  • 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced into rings
  • 150 g Kalamata olives
  • 200 g Greek feta cheese, block style
  • 45 ml extra virgin olive oil
  • 15 ml red wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • Salt & black pepper to taste

Equipment

  • Large salad bowl
  • Sharp knife and cutting board
  • Small jar or bowl (for dressing)
  • Wooden spoon (for mixing)

Method
 

  1. Prepare the vegetables: cut tomatoes into wedges, slice cucumber, onion, and bell pepper.
  2. In a large salad bowl, combine tomatoes, cucumber, onion, bell pepper, and Kalamata olives.
  3. Place a block of feta cheese on top of the vegetables.

  4. Drizzle with olive oil and red wine vinegar.
  5. Sprinkle dried oregano, season with salt and pepper.
  6. Toss gently before serving or serve as is with feta on top.

Notes

  • Always use block feta, not pre-crumbled, for authentic flavor.
  • Red wine vinegar gives the best taste, but lemon juice can be used.
  • You can add capers for an extra Mediterranean twist.
